The Oakley Grails: Items That Would Be Awesome to Acquire
Oakley makes a lot of stuff these days. It's actually hard to keep track of all the product lines they have their crazy mitts in. However, over the years they've made a few things that really excite me. Some of those things are pretty recent, and some from the relatively ancient past, but these few things top my list. Each has that unique Oakley quality to them, the things that really departed from the norm. Some of these can certainly be acquired easily enough, but cost far too much for me to justify right now, so they will have to remain my "Oakley Grails."
Time Bomb II
Along with Oakley and a variety of other things, I have a great interest in watches. I don't really have many, but I really appreciate their craftsmanship, especially when it comes to the mechanical ones. The Time Bomb II combines just about everything I could ever desire into a watch: Titanium, Carbon Fiber, mechanical automatic movement, sapphire crystals, and crazy Oakley Design. Drool. I absolutely love this watch, and it's actually pretty cheap compared to most of the "fine brands" but it's still a bit out of range for now.
C Six Carbon
If you read any of the other articles on my site here, this is obvious. The C Six is the inspiration for my forays into making carbon fiber sunglasses, and owning a pair of this ultra-limited run would be a dream come true. Honestly, if they were $1000 I'd probably get one (even at the risk of my life for spending so much on silly glasses), but the price they are at now puts them solidly into dreamland. Ah well, I'll just have to get better at making my own.
Medusa with Bob Head
This thing is just plain old wacky insane, and that's why I like it. I can think of no time I would ever use the thing, ever. But it's just so damn cool looking that it would be the ultimate display piece. I know these can be had on eBay pretty easily, but spending big bucks on something that will do nothing but sit in my display case is just a little too much to ask right now.
Zero 0.3
This vintage piece is another item that I don't imagine I'd wear, but the style of it is just very cool. I have a pair of the more normal looking 0.4, but the 0.3 is far more wild and "out there."
Romeo 1.0
I'm lucky enough to own a pair of these, and mine are in the coveted "Michael Jordan" range, serial 0190 to be precise. This puts mine in the very very early production, and I love the look of them. I did wear these daily for quite a while, but then learned of their rarity and decided to put them into a safer place. I still love this pair though, the very first of the xmetal line, and I'd love to have another pair (in the classic plain xmetal/black iridium combo) to wear normally.
X-Squared - Acquired 1/11/2010
This is the latest in the xmetal line, and the first new design in many years. I love it, and think Oakley did a great job giving homage to the originals while doing something new. I might get these as a special gift someday for a special occasion, but for now they will remain on the wish list.
